Trying to romanticise Autumn this year? Look no further than this playlist.
Autumn can be tough. The transition from summer to this cold, wet season can really be a shock to the system; going from warm summer evenings, to days where it’s dark by the time you get out of class.
It doesn’t all have to be so gloomy though. Autumn can be cosy too, and if your imagination will allow, it’s easy to romanticise, so here’s a playlist to help you do that:
(Top Tip: Listen to this playlist while it’s raining, with a candle and some hot soup, or on a crisp sunny day as you stroll through the leaves.)
‘Bridge’ // High Highs
A song that feels both eerie and heartwarming at the same time. You’ll feel like a delicate mist is forming around you as you listen.
This song is a great addition to any Autumn evening. With lyrics like “But a house gets cold when you cut the heating / Without you to hold, I’ll be freezing”, Sheeran accurately depicts an all-too-familiar feeling as the nights get colder, while adding an element of romance and longing.
‘I See Fire’ From “The Hobbit - The Desolation Of Smaug”’ // Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran makes a swift return with his 2013 motion picture soundtrack contribution. The repeated mention of “fire,” paired with the softness of Sheeran’s voice and guitar, allows an image of fire to be produced that is not dangerous, but instead warming.
‘The Sound of Silence’ // Simon & Garfunkel
Welcome Autumn back into your life with the line: “Hello darkness, my old friend / I’ve come to talk with you again”.
‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay
If Autumn is getting you down, there’s really no shame in that. Maybe some solace can be found in this UCL alum’s words: “Nobody said it was easy / It’s such a shame for us to part / Nobody said it was easy / No one ever said it would be this hard / Oh, take me back to the start”.
‘Berlin’ // RY X
Picture this: you’re walking through a forest, damp leaves beneath your feet, some still twirling down from the trees. It’s grey, but that doesn’t matter, because this song suits that perfectly.
‘Maroon’ // Taylor Swift
Want something a little less sombre? Look no further than Taylor Swift’s 2022 song ‘Maroon’. The title alone captures the autumnal mood, with the colour maroon being heavily associated with the season.
‘my tears ricochet’ // Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift can be sombre too though! When it comes to this song, it’s truly the backing track that makes it so autumnal.
‘Sleepy’ // Ashley Kutcher
Throughout this song Kutcher depicts feelings that are all-too-familiar in the Autumn time, as well as feelings that we long for throughout, e.g. “I’ve been a little bit busy / Been a little on edge”, “Livin’ my life at a slow place / All that I need is your warm embrace / Never have I ever felt so safe”, “The world gets scarier as I grow up, / I can’t take it”. These feelings, accompanied by her gentle voice and acoustic guitar, successfully create that ‘Sleepy’ feeling that we all feel from time to time throughout Autumn.
‘I Left My Heart’ // Lucy Blue
The start of Autumn often hails new beginnings, as summer ends and the academic year starts. Lucy Blue’s beautiful lyrics describe the complex relationship people often have with their own homes.
‘Android’s Lament’ // Just Jack
There’s something about the repetitive strum of the guitar in this song that mimics the routineness of life that Autumn brings back.
‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)’ // Taylor Swift
For Swifities, this song absolutely screams Autumn. With mentions of “Autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place”, “plaid shirt days and nights”, Taylor Swift’s infamous “scarf”, and “the first fall of snow” once Autumn comes to an end, this song retells a relationship that seemingly played out one fateful Autumn, years ago.
‘Habits’ // Genevieve Stokes
The change of Stokes’ voice between each verse, pre-chorus and chorus, combined with the alteration of the piano in the background, is reflective of Autumn: the season of change.
‘Ours (Taylor’s Version)’ // Taylor Swift
A much chirpier outlook on love than in Swift’s previous feature on this playlist. This song makes it to the autumnal playlist purely thanks to the opening lyric: “Elevator button and morning air”. Think dragon breath on a cold November morning.
‘The Bug Collector’ // Haley Heynderickx
Play this on a rainy day. Just like that, the scene is set.
‘evermore (feat. Bon Iver)’ // Taylor Swift and Bon Iver
With lyrics such as: “Gray November”, “Writing letters / Addressed to the fire”, “And I was catching my breath / Staring out an open window / Catching my death”, partnered with the depth of Bon Iver’s voice. Need I say anymore?
‘Where You Lead I Will Follow’ // Carole King
Is anyone reading this a Gilmore Girls fan? Then I’m sure the friendly voice of Carole King takes you right into the permanently-autumnal Stars Hollow. If you’re not a Gilmore Girls fan, then I’m sure this wholesome song will light an internal candle nonetheless. Picture yourself living in a tiny, East Coast, American suburb, packed with quirky residents, and you’ve pretty much got the picture.
‘Fell In Love Without You - Acoustic’ // Motion City Soundtrack
Something about this song makes it feel rather reminiscent, a sentiment shared with the season of Autumn.
‘Fade Into You’ // Mazzy Star
This song is so heartwarming it makes you feel all kinds of warm and fuzzy inside.
‘Microphone’ // Coconut Records
Picture leaves falling and an Autumn montage playing out to the song’s opening instrumental.
‘Sparks’ // Coldplay
This time, picture yourself driving on a rainy November day with this song playing in the car. You are the main character.
‘Salt’ // Ben Camden
Something about Ben Camden’s deep voice screams Autumn.
‘cowboy like me’ // Taylor Swift
Country Taylor’s voice paired with her backing vocalist is so soothing on an autumnal day. The song paints a vivid picture that, dare I say, is quite autumnal.
‘Stick Season’ // Noah Kahan
This song has really made its mark this Autumn. ‘Stick Season’ (as it’s known by people from Vermont) is the period of Autumn we’re in now, so this song had to be included of course.
‘There She Goes’ // the La’s
Start a sunny Autumn day off by listening to this song, and anything is possible. Cover image courtesy of Ivan Kuznetsov via Unsplash. Image license can be found here.
