After doing the festival circuit, the girls have done a showstopper one night only performance in the iconic Greenwich venue.
The girls did not have it easy from the beginning, being formed in the late 90’s in North London and despite having their debut single ‘Overload’ nominated for Best Single at the BRITs, Donaghy left the girls behind and was replaced by another 90’s pop sensation, an Atomic Kitten member.
However, the girls have not let the terrible times they’ve gone through affect them and their music in any way. With a sold out O2 arena it only proves that the music they’ve created over their 25 year career are timeless hits, for all ages and groups of people. You could play some of the classic hits anywhere and the majority of people will be up on their feet dancing.
For a one night only show, the girls chose a support that could help liven up the crowd in a fashionable way in the name of Shygirl. Her opening despite being short exceeded expectations in all capacity, and while performing ‘Cleo’, invoking everyone’s inner main character, brought an exotic dancer to the stage in which they performed an amazing solo show with a stunning background song. This was definitely a unique energy I’ve seen at such a versatile venue.
The babes without missing a beat came in hard and strong with ‘Push the Button’ in which nearly everyone flew to their feet to scream the cultural classic from the group. Every word being sung, like a massive choir, the crowd showed just how well received the girls are on their comeback to the music scene. Moving into the flow of the show, the audience were dragged in by constant anthems to keep the audience alive and moving with ease.
As the energy of the songs went down, the vibe of the audience didn’t falter once. The ballad section of the huns discography crept in and started with a deep heartfelt fan project in which pictures of loyal fans were plastered in bright lights for the O2 to take in deep and truly understand the words to ‘Ugly’.
Included in the run of the ballads, there was a trip down memory lane through the extensive past, including songs created and performed by the girls when the Sugababes name was not theirs as it should’ve been. Some of the songs from memory lane had their live debut in a big way and took lots of fans by surprise, with deep deep cuts.
However despite going low and slow, Garage was difficult to hold back and this was shown in the change over to the circular B-stage giving the fans a more intimate experience rarely shown by big names, in which cult classics were sung and turned the entire O2 into one of the largest nightclubs in the city.
After wrapping the dance section of the show, the encore was something that most shows wish to have, with the live debut of the newly released comeback ‘When the Rain Comes’ which translates so much better in person compared to digitally. Before finally being rounded off with two more of their biggest hits spinning all heads ‘Round Round’.
Leaving through the big crowd of Sugababe fans, ‘About You Now’ ringing like a siren song in all listeners ears, a stunning event with a brilliant end was had, and a feeling that needs to be felt again so soon.
