Change-making collective Girls Don’t Sync are coming to UCL’s Summer Fest.
Take a DJ, then multiply their energy by four. Girls Don’t Sync – an all-female group made up of four artists and long-time friends Matty Chiabi, Sophia Violet, Hannah Lynch and G33 – have come together to redefine what electronic music looks and sounds like. A fusion of genres, from dancehall through afrobeats to UKG, each of the four DJs brings their own individual set of skills to the collective, and that just makes it more fun.
The UK dance music scene is undoubtedly male-dominated: from your London student night out to big festival headliners, male DJs are ubiquitous, and they effectively represent the scene in most people’s minds. There has been an exciting recent shift, though, as more venues have started to embrace a more carefully curated selection of artists and events, and that has no doubt put a spotlight on women and non-binary artists.
Indeed, this new era has allowed innovative acts such as Girls Don’t Sync to play not-too-shabby festivals such as Glastonbury, Boomtown, Parklife and Lost & Found, as well as clubs including the late Printworks. Add UCL Summer Fest to the list and that’s the London and UK scene ticked off for them!
Girls Don’t Sync undoubtedly represents what is exciting about the present and future of electronic music, which is becoming increasingly more inclusive, and allowing more people who would previously not have thought they’d get something out of partying to find a space that works for them. This is something the group actively seeks to promote, through their tutoring and mentoring DJ scheme aimed at forming future women DJs. UCL’s own Electronic Music Society have been hosting women-only production sessions this year, and really, once you make inclusivity part of dance music’s ethos and make it accessible, the possibilities are endless.
