Previously described as ‘more than just music from a bunch of teens’ by NME Radio, the band L’objectif is Leeds’ newest rock icon. Their 2022 EP We Aren’t Getting Out But Tonight We Might is only the start of the band’s newfound success.
A strong opening to an EP is always appreciated, and L’objectif definitely hasn’t missed the memo. They start powerfully with the track ‘Same Thing’, where we get a taste of what the band has to offer: sturdy vocals, high-energy guitar parts, chaotic rhythms and a danceable melody. It is evident from the start that this is one of the most infectious songs on the EP. They sing: “Don’t say it’s the same thing / We both know it ain’t the same thing.” The song tackles the introspective aspect of relationships, how we worry about things that are often out of our control. Up next is ‘Get Close’. Once again, the combination of fascinating vocals and an upbeat rhythm makes this song one of the liveliest on the EP. This song grapples with the feeling of longing, contrasted with the fear of being hurt. They sing: “Yeah, all I wanna do is get close to you / I imagine you so very often / Just don’t take advantage of me.”
Following ‘Get Close’ we have ‘Feeling Down’, which starts with pitched up, electronic sounding vocals and instantly competes for the best track on the EP. The lyrics themselves deal with regret, introspection and self-deprecation. They sing repeatedly: “It’s my fault I’m feeling down.” This reflects the core of a relationship and the personal side of love, the side where things aren’t perfect, where one is left feeling as though they could have done more to save a relationship. ‘To Be Honest’, which is up next, remains within the theme of relationships, describing a situation in which there are conflicting feelings at play. First, they sing: “You and I there ain't nothing better / Hope some time we'll do things together.” They describe a flourishing relationship, but almost instantaneously crush the idea of this blossoming love by singing: “You and I we're not getting better / Hope I never see you forever.”
To conclude this rollercoaster of an EP, we have ‘Thought It Was Real’. This song also has hints of self-deprecation scattered throughout. It discusses feeling underwhelmed and suffocated by a relationship. They sing: “But at night you caught me crying / Wouldn't be lying if I said / That I'm feeling like a ghost / Time feels like the weather / The air feels like a muzzle / And this weight feels like a feather.” It is almost unbelievable that a song could so perfectly describe the feeling of suffocation within a relationship..
We Aren’t Getting Out But Tonight We Might has been a brief inquiry into relationships through a melancholy lens. Overall, we should definitely not underestimate the power of L’objectif — this is only the very beginning for them and their success.
